🎙️ Hosted by Kapeel Gupta – Human Potential Mentor, Graphotherapist & Founder of Study Abroad Academy.
Hello my dear listeners and welcome back to the Couple Gupta Career Pod Show. And today I want to begin with a strange question. When was the last time you actually sat with yourself? Yes, with yourself, not with Instagram, not with YouTube, not with your friends, not with your parents asking, beta future kakia so chai. I mean truly, sat with yourself and asked, What am I doing? Why am I doing it? And is this taking me where I actually want to go? Now that simple habit is called self-reflection. And I believe self-reflection is one of the most underrated skills in career planning and personal growth. We spend years learning mathematics, science, commerce, coding, communication, and even how to create PowerPoint presentations with unnecessary animations. But very few people teach us how to understand ourselves. And that creates a strange problem. Hi, I'm Kapal Gupta, and my mission is to help people discover their true potential and create lives of purpose and fulfillment. As a human potential mentor, grapho therapist, and founder of Study Abroad Academy, I've spent over two decades helping students, parents, and professionals gain clarity, confidence, and direction. Because the future doesn't change when you choose a different career. It changes when you become a better version of yourself. See, we become very good at moving fast without checking whether we are moving in the right direction. Just imagine a student named Rohan. Rohan is preparing for engineering entrance exams. His timetable is perfect, coaching at 7, school, practice at questions, mock tests, more questions, then at night, productivity videos explaining why he should wake up at 5 a.m. Everyone around him thinks he's focused. And one evening, after another mock test, Rohan asks himself a dangerous question. Do I actually want to become an engineer? Now for the first time, he does not answer with what his parents want, what his friends are doing, or what sounds respectable at a family function. He thinks, he realizes something, he loves solving business problems, he enjoys organizing college events, he enjoys convincing people, presenting ideas, and understanding why business grows. Engineering was not his dream. It had simply become his default. Now that question did not solve his whole career overnight, but it changed the direction of the conversation. And that is the power of self-reflection. So self-reflection does not always give you an immediate answer. Sometimes it simply helps you finally ask the right question. Think about how most people make career decisions. What are my friends choosing? What has good salary? What will my parents approve? Which career is trending? What course has scope? All these questions have some value. But there's one person missing from the discussion. You. What are you naturally good at? What work gives you the energy? What kind of problems do you enjoy solving? Or what values matter to you? Or what type of life do you want your career to support? If you never reflect on these questions, you may achieve someone else's definition of success beautifully and then wonder why you are unhappy. See, self-reflection also helps you learn from mistakes. Suppose you give an interview and do badly. Without self-reflection, you say, Oh, I'm useless at interviews. End of story. With self-reflection, you ask, what exactly went wrong? Maybe you knew the answers but became nervous. Maybe your examples were weak. Maybe you had not researched a company, or maybe your communication lacked structure. And suddenly I am bad becomes I need to improve these three things. Now that is a huge difference. Judgment attacks the person. Reflection studies the situation. And growth? Yes. Growth begins when you stop saying, What is wrong with me? And start asking, what can I learn from this? Self-reflection can also save you from comparison. A friend gets internship, another student gets admission abroad. Someone on LinkedIn announces a promotion with the words thrilled and humbled, though they look more thrilled than humbled. And suddenly you begin questioning your own life. But self-reflection, it brings you back. Instead of asking, why am I behind? You ask, is that even the destination I want? Now that question is powerful because not every opportunity you envy is an opportunity you would actually enjoy. Sometimes we are jealous of somebody's result without wanting their journey. Self-reflection helps you separate admiration from alignment. Let me give you a simple habit. At the end of each week, take 10 minutes. Yes, just 10. And ask yourself three questions. What gave me energy this week? What drained me? What did I learn about myself? Let me repeat these three questions. And if you want to note them down, please do. One, what gave me energy this week? Two, what drained me? And three, what did I learn about myself? And do this honestly for three months. Patterns will begin appearing. Maybe you notice that every time you work with people, you feel alive. Maybe research excites you. Maybe creative work keeps appearing in your happiest moments. Or maybe you realize that you love technology but dislike sitting alone for hours. Now these patterns are career clues. Your life keeps giving you information about yourself. Self-reflection is how you read it. And there's another beautiful thing about self-reflection. It teaches you to celebrate growth. Students often look only at what is missing. I still haven't got the internship. My marks are not high enough. My English isn't perfect. I don't know my career yet. But look backwards sometimes. Six months ago, maybe you could not speak confidently in front of five people. Today you can. Last year, you didn't know how to create a resume. Today you have one. Earlier, rejection destroyed your week. Today it hurts for an evening, and then you move forward. And that is growth. But unless you reflect, you may never notice it. And here's the warning self-reflection is not overthinking. It's a big, big difference. Overthinking keeps asking the same fearful question again and again and again. What if I fail? What if I fail? What if I fail? Self-reflection asks a better question. If I fail, what can I prepare differently? But overthinking creates circles, reflection creates direction. So here's my challenge for you today. So before you sleep tonight, take a sheet of paper, write one question at the top. Is the life I am building actually mine? And then write honestly for five minutes. Do not impress anyone. Nobody is checking grammar, nobody is giving marks. Ask yourself what you truly want to learn. What kind of work interests you and what you're avoiding, and what one change you know you need to make. Maybe your answer will not change your career. Maybe it will, but at least your next decision will come from awareness instead of autopilot. And now let me speak directly to the student or career aspirant listening to me. Sometimes self-reflection gives you questions that you cannot answer alone. You may know that your present career direction does not feel right, but still not know what will fit you better. That is where structured career counseling can help. So through my career counseling program, I even call it career mentorship program. I help students and career aspirants understand their strengths, interests, personality, aptitude, and future possibilities, and then turn that understanding into a practical career roadmap. So if you're confused about subjects, courses, careers, colleges, or study of broad choices, connect with me. Because choosing your career should not begin with what is everyone else doing. It should begin with who am I and what kind of future fits me. Your dream career was never lost, it was simply unread. So let us decode it together. So this is Kapil Gupta, and you're listening to the Kapil Gupta career part show. Keep moving forward, but every once in a while, look within because speed can take you far, but self-reflection, make sure it takes you in the right direction.
