Hello my dear listeners and welcome back to the Couple Gupta Career Pod Show. And today I want you to imagine something very unusual in today's fast digital world. A room is quiet, on a table lies a mechanical watch, tiny gears, tiny springs, tiny screws, tiny wheels. To most people, it looks beautiful, expensive, and mysterious. But one person looks at it and sees something more. They see design, precision, rhythm, time, patience, craft, repair, balance, history. Now that person is a horologist, and what a rare and beautiful career this is. Because a horologist is someone who studies, repairs, restores, designs, or works deeply with clocks, watches, and the science and craft of timekeeping. This is not just about fixing a watch battery in a shopping mall kiosk. This is the art and science of understanding timepieces, often mechanical ones, at a level that mixes engineering, craftsmanship, patience, and beauty. If you're a student who loves detail, precision, design, mechanics, restoration, and patient hands-on work, then this career can be deeply meaningful. It is one of those professions where the world may move fast outside, but inside your workbench, time becomes something you understand in a completely different way. Let me put it simply, most people wear watches. A horologist understands them. Most people see time. A horologist studies how it is measured, protected, restored, and brought back to life. Hi, I'm Kapal Gupta, career coach, life mentor, graphotherapist, and founder of Study Abroad Academy. I help students, parents, and young professionals gain clarity, confidence, and direction in life in Korea through deep coaching, mindset transformation, and the powerful practice of graphotherapy. Because career success is not just about choosing the right course, it's about becoming the right person for the life you truly want to build. So now let us begin with the first big question. What is the scope of this career in India and abroad? Now the truth is this horology is a niche career, but that is exactly what makes it special. This is not a mass market profession like software engineering or accounting. It's a specialist field. That means the number of roles may be smaller, but the scale is rarer. And rare skills, when built seriously, can become very valuable. In India, the scope exists, but it is concentrated. You're more likely to find opportunities in premium watch retail and after-sale service, luxury brand service centers, specialist repair workshops, independent restoration studios, antique clock and watch repair, collector markets, vintage timepiece service, and in some cases, luxury retail groups that need trained watchmakers and service experts. Now, this is not a huge open field across every city. It's more selective. That means if a young person wants to enter horology in India, they should do so with clear eyes. This career exists, but it is specialized. It rewards excellence, patience, and craftsmanship much more than volume. Now abroad, the scope becomes much more structured and visible. In the UK, Switzerland, the United States, and some parts of Europe, horology and watchmaking have more formal training pathways, stronger brand ecosystems, and clearer entry routes into professional work. Official horology bodies and training schools show that graduates can move into customer service watchmaking, brand service centers, independent repair shops, vintage watch services, watch development, manufacturing, restoration, museum work, and teaching. This is important because it shows that horology is not only about repair, it can also become a career in restoration, manufacturing support, heritage conservation, education, and luxury watch servicing. So, yes, the scope is real. In India, it's niche and often linked to premium or independent craft work. Abroad, it's more formalized and institutionally supported. And now let us make this career feel real. That what does a horologist actually do? Imagine a luxury mechanical watch comes in for servicing. The owner says it's losing time, or maybe it stops unexpectedly. Or maybe it is a vintage family heirloom that has not worked in years. A horologist may open the case, inspect the movement, examine tiny components, diagnose where clean the movement, replace or repair paths, regulate timing, reassemble the watch, and test it carefully. Now this is not a rough job. This is delicate work. You're working with extremely small parts. You need steady hands, calm focus, patience, and respect for process. Sometimes the work is modern service, sometimes it's restoration, and sometimes it's assembly, and sometimes it is diagnosis, and sometimes it's quality control, and sometimes it's customer service in a luxury watch environment. On some days, a horologist may spend hours on one timepiece. On other days, they may handle multiple repairs, checks, or service tasks. In some roles, they may also advise customers, document work, or support brand service standards. In higher end or heritage-oriented roles, the work may include restoring vintage timepieces, preserving historical mechanisms, or working on rare mechanical systems. And that is why this career is so beautiful. It's technical, yes, but it's also artistic. It's mechanical, yes, but it's also emotional. Because a watch is not always just an object, sometimes it's a memory, a gift, an heirloom, a family story, a legacy item, a personal identity piece. A horologist often works not only on machinery, but on meaning. And now let us move to the educational part. How does someone become a horologist? So this is where students need the truth, not fantasy. Unlike more common careers, horologies were of those fields where specialist schools, technical institutes, and apprenticeships often matter more than traditional universities. In India, this is a challenging part. They're limited, widely visible, internationally recognized university-level horology programs. That means the path in India is often more practical and apprenticeship-led. A student may begin through clock and watch repair training, technician-level courses, hands-on learning, and then build serious expertise through experience and specialist service environments. So if you're asking which are the best universities in India for horology, the most honest answer is this. India currently does not have the same visible dedicated horology university ecosystem that you see abroad. That does not mean the career is impossible in India. It means the route is different. A student in India may need to build this career through skill-based training, specialized workshops, watch repair courses, apprenticeships, and eventually brand or independent service opportunities. Abroad, the picture is much clearer. One of the strongest formal university options is Birmingham City University in the UK, which offers BA honors in horology and describes it as a unique undergraduate horology course. Now that is a very important name because it shows that horology can indeed be studied at university level in a serious way. Then there is VoSTEP in Switzerland, which is one of the most respected names in watchmaking training. Its official watchmaker program clearly shows career opportunities in customer services, brand service centers, independent repair shops, vintage watch services, watch development and manufacturing. Then there are the Nicholas G. Hayek watchmaking schools of Swatch Group, which show how global watch brands build talent for customer service watchmaking through formal structured training. In the United States, the Hological Society of New York offers a useful overview of full-time watchmaking schools and programs which show students that there's a wider ecosystem of accurated training pathways, not just one school. So if a student is serious about becoming a horologist, the strongest paths are often international and skill-intensive. So now let us talk about the skills. And what kind of person becomes a good horologist? First, you need patience, a real patience, not the kind students claim to have while checking their phone every two minutes. The real kind, the kind that allows you to sit quietly with precision work for long periods. Second, you need fine motor skills, steady hands matter here. Third, you need attention to detail. In horology, small mistakes are not small. They can completely affect how a timepiece functions. And fourth, you need mechanical curiosity. You should enjoy understanding how things work inside, not just how they look outside. Fifth, you need discipline and care. And this is not careless work. A horologist must respect process, cleanliness, order, and technique. And finally, you need love for the craft. Because this is not the kind of career people enter only for hype. They enter because they genuinely enjoy precision, restoration, beauty, and technical artistry. So now let us come to the money question. What does a horologist earn? I want to be transparent here because the exact title horologist is not as commonly tracked in public salary systems as Watchmaker. So the closest practical benchmark is often watchmaker salary data. In India, current salary estimates for Watchmaker suggest an average around 5 lakhs per year with a wide range depending on skill, city, employer, and specialization. Entry-level earnings can be lower, while highly skilled professionals, particularly those working with premium or luxury timepieces, can move much higher. In a niche field like this, expertise matters more than title alone. Internationally, the numbers are stronger. In the United States, current average watchmaker salary estimates are around $73,700 per year. In the United Kingdom, current estimates are around £38,300 per year. In Canada, average estimates are around $57,000 Canadian dollars per year, and premium employer listings can go significantly higher for experienced Rolex or luxury watchmakers. So, yes, financially, this can become a solid and even premium career, but only if the skill level is high. This is not a mass entry role. This is a craft profession. The more trusted your hands and reputation become, the more valuable you become. And that is one of the deepest truths of horology. And this is a career where reputation matters, craft matters, precision matters, and patience becomes income. So now let us come to the emotional core of this career. A horologist is not simply fixing watches. A horologist is protecting craftsmanship in an impatient world. In a time when most people replace things quickly, the horologist belongs to a different philosophy. Repair, restore, preserve, understand, respect, maintain. That mindset itself is beautiful. And this is why I think this career can deeply appeal to a certain kind of Gen Z student. Not everyone, but the right kind of student. The one who likes detail, the one who enjoys quiet mastery, the one who respects craftsmanship, the one who wants something unique, rare, and deeply skill-based, the one who does not just want a job, but a craft identity. If that sounds like you, then horology may be worth serious attention. Let me put it in one sentence. A horologist does not just work with watches, they work with time, precision, memory, and trust. That is a beautiful career to build. And now let me speak directly to the student or parent listening to this episode. If today's episode or horologist opened your mind to a career you had never seriously considered before, imagine how many more right fit careers may still be hidden from you.
