Namaste Dosto and welcome back to the Kapel Gupta Career Pod Show where we don't just talk jobs, we talk purpose, direction, and what makes life truly meaningful. And today's episode is about something every career aspirant, student, and dreamer must understand. The difference between letting go and self-discovery. Two big words, yeah, but they hold the key to your next big move. So let me start with a quick story. A few years ago, one of my students, let's call him Rohan, came to me completely lost. He had just dropped out of a second engineering college. His parents were furious. His friends were moving ahead. And he said to me, Sir, I don't know what I'm doing anymore. I just know I can't do this. But what Rohan didn't realize then was that his first real breakthrough wasn't dropping out, it was letting go of expectations, pressure, and the image he thought he had to maintain. And only after that came self-discovery, the process of finding what truly mattered to him. And today, Rohan is a successful UX designer in Mumbai. But more than the career, it's the peace on his face that tells the story. So let's dive into the powerful difference because letting go is not failure, and self-discovery is not a luxury. It's your fuel. And especially if you're young, ambitious, and stuck between what you are supposed to do and what you actually want. So, hello all. Now, letting go sounds simple, but ask anyone who's tried and they'll tell you it's damn hard. Why? Because we don't just hold on to people or things, we hold on to stories. Like if I quit this job, I'll disappoint everyone. If I leave this course, I'll waste my years, and if I stop chasing this dream, what will people say? Sounds familiar? Now this is emotional baggage. It comes from fear, fear of change, of judgment, of uncertainty, and it's very Indian in some ways too. We are raised to respect family, security, tradition. So letting go often feels like breaking a sacred rule. But here's the catch. When you hold on to what's not working, you're not being loyal, you are being stuck. So the psychology behind it is that our brain loves safety. Even if it's painful, familiar pain feels safer than unknown happiness. So we cling to past failures, to relationships that drain us, to careers that never felt right. But guess what? You don't grow by holding on, you grow by choosing what no longer serves you and walking away with your head high. And now let's talk about the real magic, self-discovery. Now, self-discovery is not a one-time thing. It's not like one day I'll go to Goa, do yoga, and suddenly find my true self. Nice try. But no, it's a journey, a process, and usually it starts right after you let go of something fake. So let me break it down for you. The first stage is curiosity. So you start asking questions. Do I really enjoy what I'm doing? What makes me feel alive? Or this is where journaling helps. Not fancy poetry, just honest words. Like today I felt dead during my Zoom class, or I feel most alive when editing videos. Then next comes exploration. Now this is where you try, experiment, you sign up for a course, volunteer, start freelancing, maybe fail, but each experiment teaches you something real. And then comes integration. You connect the dots, you discover, oh, I love problem solving, but not coding. Or I enjoy talking to people, but I'm not meant for sales. And this is when things start clicking, not always neatly, but honestly. And what helps in this journey? Mindfulness. You observe without judgment, feedback, you know, ask mentors, friends, or even YouTube comments. Then space. Yes, silence and time away from noise. So self-discovery is not a to-do list, it's tuning in. You stop chasing trends and start noticing your truth. So here's the part no one tells you. You can't discover yourself while holding on to your old self. So letting go isn't separate from self-discovery, it's the entry ticket. So when you drop what's not aligned, you create space, mental, emotional, even physical space. And in that space, your real interests, talents, and values finally get a voice. And remember, I told you about Rohan. So when he let go of engineering, not out of hate, but out of honesty, he opened the door to new things. He started doodling, got curious about UIUX, started watching videos, taking internships, not because it was cool, but because it felt right. Think of it like cleaning your cupboard. Until you throw out old clothes, you don't even realize you had space for a new wardrobe. Another example? Tanya, a commerce grad who kept failing C exams. She finally admitted she didn't care about finance. So what she loved was training others. Today she's a soft skills coach earning six figures and helping thousands online. So letting go isn't loss. It's lightness. It's saying this isn't my path. And that's okay. So only after that can you start the real journey inward. So okay, all this gyn is great. But what now? How do you actually do it? So here are a few simple practical tools to kick start your shift. One, do a letting-go ritual. Take 15 minutes, write down one belief or expectation that's been holding you back. Like I must become an engineer to make my parents proud. Then read it loud. Take a deep breath, tear that paper, burn it safely or flush it. It sounds silly, but your brain listens to rituals. And I'm sure you must have seen the ritual between Shahid Kapoor and Karina Kapoor in Jabvi Met movie. So exactly that. Second, daily reflection prompt. Every night write one line. What did I do today that felt forced? And one more, what gave me energy today? So this simple habit rewires your attention. You stop reacting and start noticing patterns. And third, set a mini release goal. Yes, don't try to fix your whole life. Just ask, what can I let go of today? Maybe it's a toxic group chat, a fake LinkedIn brag, or just the idea that you are behind. So your journey starts small, but it starts now. So let's come full circle. If you're listening to this today, chances are there's something in your life you know you've outgrown a subject, a city, a relationship, or a self-image. And there's probably a part of you whispering, but what if I disappoint someone? Or what if I regret it later? Or what if I have nothing better waiting? Now that's the fear talking. That's the part of you addicted to the known. But here's the truth your career isn't a checklist, it's a canvas. And sometimes the best thing you can do is erase that one line that never felt right and draw again. Letting go doesn't mean you gave up, it means you gave yourself permission to grow. And self-discovery, that's not luxury for the privilege. It's your birthright, but only if you make space for it. So tonight, take 15 minutes, write down what you're ready to release, and then do it. One small action, one honest conversation, one baby step. Because clarity isn't found in overthinking, it's found in movement. And I promise, on the other side of letting go, you'll meet someone incredible. You. So until next time, keep growing, keep questioning, and never settle for a life that doesn't feel like yours. So this is Kapil Gupta signing off from the Kapil Gupta Career Pod Show. So your real talk station for the career you actually want.
