Hello and Namaste to my dear listeners, and welcome to another exciting episode of the Kapal Gupta Career Pod Show, where we dive deep into the world of careers to help you choose the right path for a bright future. Now let me start today with a simple question. When we think about doctors, surgeons, or hospitals, who do we often forget to thank? That's right, the nurses. Nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system, tirelessly working behind the scenes to ensure patients receive the best care. And in this episode, we are exploring the noble and rewarding career of a nurse. Whether you are passionate about helping others, looking for a stable job with global opportunities, or entrusted in healthcare, nursing might just be the career for you. So stay tuned as we discuss the scope, responsibilities, qualifications, skills, and salaries associated with this incredible professional. I'm on a mission to coach and mentor 100,000 high school students and help them realize their dream of studying in the best universities of the world and build happy careers for themselves. So you know, just the other day I was in a hospital visiting a relative, and I couldn't help but notice how the nurses were literally running the show. From managing patient care to assisting doctors, from handling emergency situations to providing emotional support. These healthcare warriors do it all. And that's exactly why we are discussing this wonderful career option today. So nursing is a career that opens doors both within India and across the globe. In India alone, we are facing a shortage of nearly 2 million nurses. Our healthcare sector is growing rapidly. India is home to a growing healthcare industry with an increasing demand for qualified nurses in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and community health centers. Government initiatives like the Ayushman Bharat have created more opportunities for healthcare professionals, especially nurses. In specialized fields such as the critical care, paediatric nursing, and oncology nursing are in high demand. But that's not all. If you're dreaming of going abroad, Indian nurses are highly valued internationally, particularly in countries like the United States, UK, Canada, Australia, and Gulf nations. Now these countries have special visa programs for qualified nurses. These countries offer excellent working conditions, high salaries and opportunities for further specialization. For instance, the NHS in the UK often recruits Indian nurses directly through government agreements. Now let's understand what exactly a nurse does. Now nursing is not just about giving injections. Modern nursing is a complex and sophisticated profession. I must say it's not just a job, it's a calling. Nurses are involved in every aspect of patient care. Here's what the typical responsibilities include patient care, monitoring vital signs, administering medications, dressing wounds and ensuring the comfort of patients, in collaboration, working closely with doctors and healthcare teams to create and implement treatment plans, then the emotional support, providing emotional care to patients and their families often during difficult times, then administrative tasks, maintaining patient records, scheduling procedures, and ensuring compliance with health care regulations, then specializations. Nurses can specialize in fields like neonatal care, surgical nursing, or mental health nursing. Now here's what a typical day might look like. Morning shift starts with handover from the night staff, checking vital signs of patients, then administering medications as prescribed, assisting doctors during rounds, maintaining detailed patient records, then supervising junior staff and nursing assistants, and then handling emergency situations, and finally providing emotional support to patients and families. Now work environments for nurses include hospitals, outpatient clinics, schools, and even remote or rural areas during health drives and even cruise ships. Yes, you heard that right. Cruise ships. Now let's talk about what are the skills needed. Empathy and patience. You'll work with people in pain and distress. So compassion is a must. Emotional stability also becomes necessary. Then the communication skills, effective ones with patients, families, and healthcare teams is crucial. Then critical thinking, quick decision making and emergencies is a key aspect of the job. Then physical stamina. Nurses often work long shifts requiring energy and resilience. And then finally, attention to detail. A minor mistake in medication or procedures can have serious consequences. Now let's talk about the qualifications. So to become a nurse, you can follow these pathways. The auxiliary nursing midwifery ANM. It's a two-year diploma program. Then journal nursing and midwifery. A three-year diploma course, often followed by a BSc in nursing, then Bachelor of Science, that is BSc in nursing, a four-year undergraduate degree that opens doors to advanced roles and then masters, that is MSc in nursing. For those who want to specialize or take up leadership roles in healthcare, one can specialize in areas like critical care, pediatric nursing, or even mental health nursing. Now, some of the best universities for nursing in India is the Ames, New Delhi, then Christian Medical College, Vellor, Manipal College of Nursing, based in Manipal, then Armed Forces Medical College, most popularly known as AFMC Pune, and St. John's College for Nursing, Bengaluru. Now let's talk about the top international institutions for studying abroad. John Hopkins School of Nursing, United States, the University of Pennsylvania, USA, King's College, London, UK, University of Toronto, Canada, then Monash University and University of Melbourne, both in Australia. Now the question you'll all be waiting for, that's the salary. So let's talk about India first. The starting salaries for nurses range from 25,000 to 35,000 per month. With experience in specialization, salaries can go up to 50,000 to 1 lakh rupees per month, and government nurses often receive additional perks like housing and allowances. Talking abroad, in United States, the average salary for registered nurses is around 75,000 to 100,000 dollars per year. In UK, nurses earn between 25,000 to 35,000 pounds annually with opportunities for overtime pay. Then in Canada, salaries range from 60,000 to 90,000 Canadian dollars per year, and in the Gulf Nation, monthly salaries for nurses can range from 150,000 to 3, tax-free with accommodation included. Now let's talk about why let's choose nursing as a career. So job security. Healthcare is an evergreen industry, ensuring a steady demand for nurses. Then global opportunities, the chance to work abroad is a major attraction for many nursing students. Then making a difference. Yes, few careers offer the opportunity to touch lives as profoundly as nursing, and then the growth opportunities. From becoming a nurse educator to hospital management, the possibilities are endless. So, my dear listeners, as we wrap up today's episode, I want to emphasize that nursing is not just a job. It's a noble profession that gives you the opportunity to make a real difference in people's lives. Now, whether you choose to serve in India or explore opportunities abroad, nursing offers stable employment, good income, and most importantly, the satisfaction of helping others. As Florence Nightingale, the founder of Modern Nursing, once said, nursing is an art. And if it is to be made an art, it requires an exclusive devotion. As hard a preparation as any painter's or sculptor's work. So if you are passionate about helping others, nursing is more than a career. It's a lifelong mission. So if you found this episode insightful, don't forget to share it with friends and family who might be considering a career in healthcare.
