Hello, my dear listeners, and welcome to the Kapel Gupta Career Pod Show, your ultimate guide to career success and personal growth. And today we are diving into one of the most intriguing and sought after careers in the digital age, ethical hacking. In a world where cyber threats are constantly evolving, ethical hackers play a crucial role in safeguarding information and systems. The world of hacking is often shrouded in mystery and misconception. Where some hackers exploit vulnerabilities for malicious purposes, many ethical hackers use their skills for good, identifying security flaws and making the digital world a safer place. And whether you are a tech savvy or just curious about this field, stay tuned as we explore the scope, nature of work, required skills, educational qualifications, and potential earnings in this exciting profession. Hello all, I'm Kapal Gupta, founder of Study Abroad Academy. I am on a mission to coach and mentor 100,000 high school students and help them realize the dream of studying in the best universities of the world and build happy and successful careers for themselves. So without further ado, let's continue with the podcast. Let me first tell you who an ethical hacker is. For some of you, you might have heard the term but not aware of it. Ethical hackers are security experts who perform these proactive security assessments to help improve an organization's security posture. With prior approval from the organization or owner of an IT asset, the mission of an ethical hacker is the opposite of malicious hacking. Have you heard of Kevin Mitnick? He's actually a household name in the hacking community. His exploits in the 1980s and 90s made him a legend. However, after serving his time in embracing ethical hacking, Mitnik has become a sought-after security consultant, speaker, and author. He founded Mittnik Security, a cybersecurity firm, and actively advocates for responsible hacking practices. Now, if you might feel that this field belongs to men, you are hugely mistaken. Katie Moussoris, nicknamed the Queen of Hackers, is a French security researcher and entrepreneur. She's known for her work on web application security and her ability to find critical vulnerabilities in popular websites and software. She co-founded Hacker One, a bug bounty platform that connects security researchers with organizations to identify and fix vulnerabilities. So now let's discuss the scope for ethical hackers. Now it's vast and ever growing, both in India and globally. With the rapid digitization of services and the increasing reliance on technology, cybersecurity has become a top priority for organizations. In India, companies ranging from IT firms, banks, and government agencies are seeking skilled ethical hackers to protect their data from breaches and cyber attacks. Abroad, the demand is equally high, if not higher. Countries like the United States, Canada, Australia, and those in Europe are actively looking for cybersecurity professionals, offering lucrative packages and opportunities to work with cutting-edge technologies. Ethical hackers, also known as white hat hackers, use their skill to identify vulnerabilities in systems, networks, and applications. Now that is what their nature of work is. They conduct penetration tests, security assessments, vulnerability scans to ensure that the systems are robust against potential threats. Their work involves simulating cyber attacks to find security weaknesses before malicious hackers can exploit them. Ethical hackers also provide recommendations for strengthening security measures and often work closely with IT departments to implement these changes. Now the nature of this work requires a mix of technical expertise, problem-solving abilities, and creativity. Now coming to the educational skills and qualifications. So to become a successful ethical hacker, you need a blend of technical skills and certifications. So now let's first discuss technical skills, proficiency in programming languages like Python, Java and C, knowledge of operating systems such as Linux and Windows, understanding of network concepts and protocols, familiarity with cybersecurity tools and software, then certifications. That is obtaining certifications such as Certified Ethical Hacker, Offensive Security Certified Professional, and Certified Information System Security Professional can significantly enhance your credibility and job prospects. A bachelor's degree in computer science, IT, or cybersecurity is often required. Some roles may prefer candidates with a master's degree or specialized courses in cybersecurity. Now the soft skills can be analytical thinking, attention to detail, problem solving skills, and ability to work under pressure are crucial for this role. Now the teenagers or the people who want to foray into this sector would like to know about the salaries. So ethical hacking is not only a rewarding career in terms of job satisfaction but also in terms of compensation. In India, entry-level ethical hackers can expect to earn between 3 to 6 lakhs rupees per annum. Now with experience and advanced certifications, that can rise to 10 to 20 lakhs per annum. So senior professionals and those in managerial positions can earn upwards of INR 25 lakhs per annum. And globally, the salary packages are even more attractive. In the United States, entry-level ethical hackers can earn around $70,000 to $90,000 per annum, and with experienced professionals earning between $120,000 to $150,000, and in countries like Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, the salaries are similarly competitive, reflecting the high demand for cybersecurity expertise. And to conclude, the field of ethical hacking offers a dynamic and fulfilling career path for those passionate about cybersecurity. With the increasing frequency of cyber attacks and the need for robust security measures, the demand for skilled ethical hackers is set to rise. And if you have a knack for technology and problem solving, this career can provide both personal and professional growth. It's important to remember that ethical hackers are not criminals. They are security professionals who use their skills for good. Their work benefits everyone who uses the internet, making it a more secure and trustworthy place.
