Now they ensure that the company complies with all legal and regulatory requirements, manage corporate governance, and act as a bridge between the board of directors and stakeholders. Now this profession is not only respected but also comes with a significant amount of responsibility. So, first things first, that is who is a company secretary. So we can say the person is an in-house legal expert, a compliance officer of the company, an expert in corporate laws, security laws, and capital market and corporate governance. The person can be chief advisor to the board of directors on best practices in corporate governance, responsible for all regulatory compliances of company, and of course, corporate planner and strategic manager. And talking about the scope of a CS in India and abroad. In India, the demand for qualified company secretaries is on the rise. Thanks to the stringent regulatory environment and increasing corporate governance requirements. Every listed company in India is mandated to have a full-time company secretary, making it a lucrative career option. Additionally, with the growing number of startups and small businesses, the need for compliance and governance is becoming more pronounced. And talking about globally, company secretaries are also in high demand, particularly in countries like the United States, Canada, UK, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, Middle East, and Singapore, where corporate governance is taken very, very seriously. The international scope for a CS professional is vast, and with the right qualifications and experience, one can find opportunities in multinational corporations and financial hubs around the world. Now let's dig into the nature of work for a company secretary. He is a multidisciplinary professional rendering services in the following areas. First, corporate government and secretarial services, corporate laws advisory and representative services, financial market services, and lastly, management services. Now the duties are varied and include ensuring compliance with corporate laws and regulations, advising the board on governance matters, maintaining statutory registers and records, filing returns with regulatory authorities, coordinating board meetings and general meetings, and drafting company reports and communications. A CS professional also plays a crucial role in mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructuring and handling stakeholder relations. It's a role that demands attention to detail, a strong understanding of the law, and excellent communication skills. Now let's talk about the skills and educational qualifications required to become a company secretary. To start with, one needs to complete the company secretary course offered by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India, ICSI. Now this course is divided into three stages. First, foundation program, and that is of eight months duration, and can be pursued by 10 plus 2 past students or equivalent students of arts, science or commerce, excluding fine arts. Second, executive program. It can be pursued by a graduate of all streams except fine arts or CPT past of ICAI or Foundation Program past of ICAI slash CMA. Then third, professional program and can be pursued only after clearing the executive program of CS course. Now after passing these stages, one also needs to complete a period of practical training. The best part is that the admission to the CS course is open throughout the year. Examinations are held twice a year in June and December, and students have to register online at www.icsi.edu. Now let's talk about the skills essential for this role. We are strong understanding of corporate law and governance, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, analytical and problem-solving abilities, attention to detail and organizational skills, integrity and ethical judgment. In India, the starting salary for a CS can range from INR 4 to 6 lakhs per annum, and with experience, this can rise significantly with senior CS professionals earning upwards of 20 lakhs per annum, and especially in large corporations. In UK, for example, the average salary can range from £30,000 to £100,000 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications. In countries like Australia and Singapore, the compensation can be even higher, reflecting the high demand for governance professionals.
